On the one hand, yes it saves some pollution and protects the environment a little (the processes required to recycle iron are by nature going to hurt the environment), but some things are exceedingly difficult to recycle.

Worldwide people buy a million plastic bottles per minute and the 91% of them end up in the garbage. The consequences for our land, water, and wildlife are disastrous.
The study found that in a single year, recycling and reuse activities in the United States accounted for: 681,000 jobs; $37.8 billion in wages; and; $5.5 billion in tax revenues.
